Welcome back to Bartow Arena, where the UAB basketball team improved to 14-7 overall and 5-5 in C-USA following its 65-59 victory over Louisiana Tech. The Blazers grab the regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs in the final regular-season meeting as conference rivals.
The Blazers shot 42 percent overall, 25 percent from beyond the arc, and put together an impressive second half where they rallied from an 8-point deficit. Eric Gaines led UAB with 19 points, along with 6 assists and 3 steals, and KJ Buffen earned his fourth double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds. — KJ Buffen fouled by LA Tech with 1:36 left in the game and hits 1-of-2 free throws to record his fourth double-double of the season.
— LA Tech’s Keaston Willis makes his third 3-pointer of the game and cuts the UAB lead down to 59-53 with 2:37 remaining in the game.
— UAB 59, LA Tech 50 (2:48) | Under-4 timeout: Eric Gaines makes his second 3-pointer of the game before the final media timeout and the Blazers have their largest lead of the game.
— Ledarrius Brewer scores on an inside layup and UAB forces a 3-point miss from LA Tech on the other end. Tony Toney drains a 3-pointer on the ensuing UAB possession to give the Blazers a 56-48 lead.
— Keaston Willis makes a pair of fair throws and Kenny Hunter grabs a layup for LA Tech, cutting the UAB lead to 51-48 with 6:22 remaining.
— Trey Jemison takes a pass underneath and lays it up to give the Blazers a 49-44 lead with a little more than seven minutes left in the game.
— UAB 47, LA Tech 44 (7:55) | Under-8 timeout: Tony Toney finds his way through traffic for a slam and pushes the UAB lead back up to 3 points with less than nine minutes to play. Blazers with possession out of the timeout.
— KJ Buffen completes a 17-5 run with a dunk to give UAB a 45-41 lead, but LA Tech’s Cobe Williams drains a 3-pointer to cut the lead to a single point, ending a 6:46 field-goal drought by the Bulldogs.
— Eric Gaines scores on consecutive possessions, the last off a steal, to give the Blazers a 43-40 lead with less than 11 minutes remaining in the game.
— LA Tech 40, UAB 39 (11:58) | Under-12 timeout: Blazers have not scored in 2:39 but have held the Bulldogs without a field goal for 4:30. Keaston Willis hits a pair of free throws as LA Tech retakes the lead by a single point.
— KJ Buffen rebounds a 3-point miss by LEdarrius Brewer, misses and rebounds his own shot, and then lays the ball in to give UAB its first lead, 39-38, since the first minute of the game.
— Eric Gaines forces a steal and drives the lane for the layup plus the harm. He fails to convert the 3-point play and LA Tech leads 38-37.
— LA Tech 38, UAB 35 (15:37) | Under-16 timeout: Trey Jemison grabs consecutive buckets and LEdarrius Brewer hits a trio of free throws to pull the Blazers within a single possession. LA Tech’s Cobe Williams and Isaiah Crawford were charged with a third foul each on back-to-back plays.
— LA Tech’s Keaston Willis fires off his second 3-pointer of the game and Cobe Williams converts an and-1 opportunity to push the Bulldogs’ lead to 36-28.
— Eric Gaines with a strong drive to the basket and he converts an old-fashioned 3-point play to pull UAB within 30-28 on the first possession of the second half. Trey Jemison blocks a last-second shot on the other end and forces a shot-clock violation by LA Tech.
HALFTIME: LA Tech 30, UAB 25
— KJ Buffen makes a strong move to the basket, makes the basket but misses the and-1 opportunity with less than a minute remaining in the half. Blazers hold LA Tech scoreless for the final 2:33 of the first half.
— LA Tech’s Cobe Williams hits back-to-back 3-pointers to give Bulldogs a 30-23 lead and UAB is called for another travel on the other end.
— Cobe Williams drains a 3-pointer for LA Tech after the timeout and Javian Davis hits 1-of-2 free throws to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 27-23 late in the first half.
— LA Tech 24, UAB 22 (3:33) | Under-4 timeout: Trey Jemison cuts the lead to a single possession with a dunk but is called for traveling before the final media timeout of the period.
— UAB’s Tony Toney hits a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 21-20 but Keaston Willis responds with his own 3-pointer on the other end for LA Tech.
— LA Tech 21, UAB 17 (6:35) | Under-8 timeout: Ledarrius Brewer scores on a short jumper, following a pair of turnovers by each team, but the Bulldogs maintain the lead on a 3-pointer by Jordan Crawford.
— Javian Davis hits 1-of-2 free throws and then forces a steal on the ensuing possession before getting fouled again. He makes 1-of-2 to cut the LA Tech lead down to 18-15 with 8:41 remaining in the first half.
— The Blazers hold LA Tech to a 4:48 scoring drought before Dravon Mangum scores on a short jumper to push the Bulldogs’ lead back up to 5 points.
— LA Tech 16, UAB 10 (11:55) | Under-12 timeout: KJ Buffen ends a 3:04 scoring drought with 1-of-2 free throws but Blazers have not made a field goal the last 3:58. LA Tech is currently on a 2:26 scoring drought.
— Trey Jemison scores off an Eric Gaines’ assist following the timeout but LA Tech hits a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead at the 14:07 mark of the half.
— LA Tech 10, UAB 7 (16:00) | Under-16 timeout: Trey Jemison fouls LA Tech’s Cobe Williams on a 3-point attempt and Williams makes a three to give the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead. UAB is fouled and has possession out of the first media timeout.
— Eric Gaines takes a wide-open pass o the wing and drains the first 3-pointer of the game for the Blazers. Trey Jemison and Ledarrius Brewer score on assisted layups to tie the game at 7-all with a little less than three minutes played.
— LA Tech wins the tip and Eric Gaines is charged with a foul on the Blazers’ first defensive possession of the game.
